On the radio 4 Today program (9th July 2019 7.45am) Dr William Van Gordon from Derby University explained that our modern lifestyle has created a new adverse psychological condition where by we have limited sensory awareness, restricting our senses of what is actually happening in real time. This condition develops a blunted and distorted understanding of reality. People can experience this in small amounts, but in some cases people sometimes use mobile phones without any awareness of what is around them, such as crossing the road, eating a meal, travelling to work. In these cases, these people have no recollection of what they have eaten or the journey to work. Our modern lifestyle today draws people into this condition. They can have limited appreciation of the importance of being with themselves, or self awareness, that is understanding our emotional being. We are constantly being drawn away from ourselves which can lead to mental health problems. This is beginning to become a public health concern. The digital industry is exploiting a floor in out psychology and it is not so easy to revers this. The Alexander Technique gives us a tool to do just this, re-gaining our self awareness
